‘Broken Vein’ selected as Greece’s official Oscar submission

“Broken Vein,” a fiction film directed by Yannis Economidis, will represent Greece in the Oscar race for Best International Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards.

The selection followed a meeting of a 13-member committee formed specifically to choose Greece’s submission for the 2026 awards process. The committee was appointed by the Culture Ministry after being nominated by film organizations.

After extensive discussion, the committee recommended “Broken Vein” by majority vote. Its reasoning described the film as narratively, artistically and technically accomplished. It also said the work reinterprets motifs from ancient tragedy in a way recognizable to an international audience.

The committee highlighted the story of a protagonist facing an impasse in present-day Greece. It said the film combines universal and local elements and comes from a director with international recognition.

The deputy culture minister accepted the committee’s recommendation and issued the relevant decision on September 4, 2026. The Culture Ministry said it would oversee the timely completion of the procedures required under the Academy’s rules.
