Bronze maple leaf stolen from monument honoring slain New Brunswick RCMP officers

Police in southeastern New Brunswick are investigating the theft of a bronze maple leaf from a monument dedicated to three RCMP officers killed in the line of duty. Insp. Jonathan White stated the statue at The Honour Garden holds "tremendous significance" for police and Moncton residents. He described the theft of the plaque as "deeply concerning and disappointing," emphasizing it symbolizes remembrance, respect, and gratitude.

The monument honors Constables Fabrice Gevaudan, David Ross, and Douglas Larche. They were killed in June 2014 by Justin Bourque, who was armed with a rifle and shotgun. Bourque, driven by paranoia and hatred for the government, also wounded two other officers during the incident. A manhunt lasting over 29 hours followed before Bourque was apprehended. He was subsequently convicted and sentenced to life in prison.
