Brunner’s double puts Monaco top of Ligue 1 after 2-0 win over Marseille

Paris Brunner scored twice as Monaco defeated Marseille 2-0, giving the club sole possession of the Ligue 1 lead after two matches.

Monaco opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Brunner rose between two defenders to head in Aleksandr Golovin’s cross. Marseille held the ball for long periods, but Monaco’s defense repeatedly blocked their attempts to create clear chances.

Timothy Weah came close to an equalizer in the 53rd minute, sending a powerful effort from a tight angle into the side netting. A minute later, Brunner broke away from the defense after collecting a long pass, cut inside and placed the ball into the far corner for his second goal.

The victory followed Monaco’s 1-0 away win over Le Havre in the opening round. Monaco now lead the standings with six points, ahead of Paris FC on four and Lille and Olympique Lyonnais on goal difference. Reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain are 11th after drawing their first two matches, while Auxerre are last despite scoring three goals in two defeats.
