Brussels plants Meyboom for 718th time, just before deadline

Brussels successfully upheld its centuries-old Meyboom tradition, planting the tree for the 718th time on Sunday. The 'tree bearers' managed to erect the beech precisely at 4:42 PM at the intersection of Broekstraat and Zandstraat, comfortably beating the 5 PM deadline.

Hundreds of spectators applauded the effort, which required about ten attempts and the use of ropes to hoist the towering 18 to 20-meter beech tree. The atmosphere remained festive throughout the day, filled with songs, fanfare music, and dancing giants.

The tradition, which dates back to 1308, commemorates the victory of the people of Brussels over those of Leuven in 1213. The core challenge is to plant the tree before 5 PM, or risk losing the privilege to Leuven. This year's event was particularly significant as it is recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage.

Adding to the tradition, Leuven also planted its Meyboom for the 53rd time, maintaining the historical rivalry. Due to ongoing construction at Leuven's city hall, the tree was planted near Sint-Pieterskerk, adhering to the same 5 PM deadline.
