Brussels rocked by escalating gang violence linked to drug trade

Brussels is caught in a spiral of escalating gang violence, with authorities identifying a "retaliation dynamic" between rival criminal organizations as the primary driver of recent shootings. The conflict, rooted in the lucrative drug trade, has seen an alarming increase in armed confrontations across the city, particularly in the communes of Saint-Gilles and Forest.

Compounding the problem, these criminal networks are increasingly targeting and recruiting minors from French cities, including Valenciennes, Lille, and Marseille. Prosecutors describe these adolescents as "easy prey" for the gangs, drawn into dangerous activities due to their vulnerability. This trend has raised serious concerns among law enforcement officials, who are struggling to contain the violence.

Judicial figures, including the Brussels King's Prosecutor Julien Moinil, have voiced grave concerns about the pervasive nature of the violence. Moinil noted that the situation has shown little improvement since last year, with 102 shooting incidents recorded in 2025 and 69 already by late July 2026. He expressed pessimism about an imminent de-escalation, stating, "Will it calm down soon? I don't think so."

The violence has had devastating consequences for innocent civilians. Reports detail individuals suffering life-altering injuries, such as permanent paralysis from gunshot wounds, and others being caught in the crossfire. The proximity of the violence to residential areas and public spaces, like cafes and pizzerias, has instilled widespread fear among the populace. Authorities acknowledge the difficulty in combating this entrenched problem, which involves sophisticated criminal structures and a growing reliance on vulnerable young recruits.
