Bucharest airports to be equipped with drone detection and neutralization systems

Bucharest's Henri Coandă (Otopeni) and Băneasa airports are preparing to bolster their defenses against drones. The National Company of Airports Bucharest (CNAB) has initiated a market consultation process to gauge the potential costs associated with acquiring and operating counter-unmanned aircraft systems (C-UAS).

CNAB is looking for integrated systems capable of not only detecting and identifying drones but also tracking and neutralizing them. The consultation aims to gather information from potential suppliers regarding the costs of equipment, as well as essential services such as personnel training, maintenance, and repairs over a four-year period (24 months warranty and 24 months post-warranty).

These systems must be operational in various weather conditions and capable of functioning both day and night. CNAB is exploring the integration of both non-kinetic (non-physical intervention) and kinetic (physical intervention) neutralization methods. This proactive measure addresses the growing concern over drones posing risks to critical infrastructure like airports, where unauthorized intrusions could compromise flight safety.

Romania already possesses a drone defense system within its civil aviation authority, acquired in 2025. However, for the airports under CNAB's administration, the company is proceeding with a cost estimation phase before moving forward with a formal procurement process.
