Buenos Aires Airport to Close for Three Days for Runway Repairs

Aeroparque Jorge Newbery, Buenos Aires's domestic airport, will completely halt commercial operations for three days in late August to undergo critical runway maintenance. The closure, scheduled from Tuesday morning, August 25, to Thursday afternoon, August 27, is necessary for comprehensive safety and efficiency upgrades.

During this period, the airport operator will conduct extensive preventive work on the entire runway. This includes sealing cracks, repairing joints, decontamination, repainting markings, and adjusting the lighting system. The company stated that while the interruption is not ideal for the aviation industry, they worked with airlines to find the least disruptive window, avoiding issues like the one experienced last December when a runway asphalt detachment forced a multi-hour closure.

The three-day shutdown is expected to impact around 900 flights. International flights will be redirected to Ministro Pistarini International Airport (Ezeiza). Domestic carriers will manage the reaccommodation of approximately 600 flights, though Ezeiza has the capacity to handle about half of this domestic demand. This maintenance is part of a larger, over $85 million investment to modernize Aeroparque. The upgrades also include expanding pre-departure areas, implementing new check-in technology, and increasing commercial space. The national sector will gain 400 square meters, and the international sector will grow by 1000 square meters. The airport will also see an enhanced dining experience with new establishments and a new VIP lounge overlooking the Río de la Plata, aiming to elevate service standards at Argentina's busiest terminal.
