Buenos Aires Governor Pushes to Repeal Mayor Re-election Ban, Sparking Debate

Governor Axel Kicillof of Buenos Aires province has ignited a political firestorm by advocating for the repeal of a law that limits municipal mayors to two consecutive terms. This move is widely seen as a strategic play to bolster his presidential aspirations for 2027, as it would allow incumbent mayors to seek re-election and potentially support his campaign.

The proposed reform directly impacts 80 of the province's 135 mayors. If the law remains unchanged, these officials would be ineligible for the next election cycle. Of those affected, 53 are from Kicillof's own party, Unión por la Patria, while 27 belong to the UCR or local parties. This has created a buzz among local politicians, with many of Kicillof's allies reportedly in favor of the reform and urging for swift action.

The legislative battle hinges on the stances of two crucial blocs: the Frente Renovador, led by Sergio Massa, and the Radical Civic Union (UCR). Both parties were instrumental in passing the original law under former Governor María Eugenia Vidal, which ended indefinite re-elections. While some within the UCR express divided opinions, with some believing voters should decide and others favoring term limits, the party has yet to formally declare its position. The Frente Renovador, currently holding a rotating presidency in the Chamber of Deputies, has signaled it may not change its stance in favor of eliminating term limits, creating further complexity in the legislative process.
