Buenos Aires makes a more-than-three-ton alfajor, the world’s largest

Argentina has claimed the record for the world's largest alfajor with a pastry weighing 3,112 kilograms, overtaking Uruguay's 464-kilogram mark from 2010.

The giant confection was made Saturday during the first day of Cafecito BA, a Buenos Aires city government festival celebrating specialty coffee culture. A Guinness World Records judge attended the event in Recoleta's Plaza de las Naciones Unidas and verified the result.

More than 100 people took part in making and assembling the alfajor, including teachers and students from the International Gastronomic Institute. The recipe required 1,400 kilograms of dulce de leche, 400 kilograms of chocolate, 800 kilograms of flour, more than 7,500 eggs and 100 kilograms of honey.

The official weighing covered 46 pieces. After the judge certified the 3,112-kilogram total, organizers served 60,000 portions to the crowd. “Today Guinness World Records was present to verify an official attempt for the world's largest alfajor,” the judge said. “After the entire verification and validation process, and after weighing the 46 pieces, we were able to certify that the weight was 3,112 kilograms, so congratulations, Argentina.”

Streamer and YouTuber Iván Buhajeruk Fernández, known as Spreen, also took part in the event. He recently launched his own alfajor brand, Giga. The portion not distributed to the public went to one of Buenos Aires' early-childhood centers. Cafecito BA continues Sunday with more than 20 coffee stands, food, live shows, an open-air cinema, reading spaces and DJ sets. Admission is free.
