Buenos Aires opens first major cinema in southern district

Villa Lugano in Buenos Aires's southwest now boasts its first major cinema, marking a significant cultural and entertainment upgrade for residents of the Comuna 8 neighborhoods. The new complex, situated within the Factory Parque Brown shopping center, features five screens and can accommodate over a thousand patrons. This development aims to broaden the cultural offerings in an area that has historically lacked such amenities.

The cinema's arrival is a welcome change for thousands of locals who previously faced journeys of 8 to 12 kilometers, often requiring multiple bus transfers, to reach the nearest cinemas in areas like Flores or Caballito. The new venue is integrated into the Factory Parque Brown complex, which already hosts over 80 retail outlets, a supermarket, and a food court, enhancing its appeal as a community hub.

City officials highlighted the inauguration as a step towards more equitable access to cultural experiences and strengthening Villa Lugano's identity as a recreational destination. It is also expected to generate new employment opportunities. Buenos Aires Mayor Jorge Macri emphasized that families in the southern zone no longer need to travel extensively for movie outings, as they can now enjoy films just blocks from their homes.

Marcelo Di Mario, the Undersecretary for Integration and Development of the South, noted that the cinema addresses a historic demand from residents of Villa Lugano, Villa Soldati, and Villa Riachuelo. The new complex is easily accessible via public transport, with several bus lines and the Premetro tram stopping nearby.

The cinema's opening is part of a broader development plan for southern Buenos Aires. This area has increasingly become a focal point for cultural events, hosting concerts, international festivals, and sporting events at venues like Parque de la Ciudad and the Mary Terán de Weiss Stadium. These initiatives are consolidating the south of the city as a burgeoning center for culture, recreation, and entertainment.
