Bulgaria Sets Presidential Election for October 25

Bulgaria will hold its presidential election on October 25, as determined by the nation's parliament. This vote will be a significant test for the ruling centrist-left Bulgarian Progressive Party, led by Prime Minister Rumen Radev.

The presidency in Bulgaria holds a largely ceremonial role, with the prime minister and parliament wielding the majority of the country's power. However, the president serves as the supreme commander of the armed forces, can veto legislation, and signs international treaties.

Prime Minister Radev's party has endorsed the current Vice President, Iliana Iotova, as their presidential candidate. Radev himself previously served two terms as president before resigning to become prime minister following his party's decisive victory in the April general election. Iotova has been Radev's vice president for nine years.

This election is crucial for Radev, as it represents the first national referendum on his party's ability to extend its political dominance since the April elections ended years of political deadlock. A victory for Iotova would ensure that both the presidency and the government remain under the control of Radev's long-standing political allies. Presidents in Bulgaria are directly elected to five-year terms and can serve a maximum of two terms. If no candidate secures more than half of the votes in the first round, a runoff election will be held on November 1.
