Bundesliga: HSV suffer humiliating home defeat to Mainz 05

Hamburger SV’s expensive transfer business has yet to translate onto the pitch. After two Bundesliga matches, the club has no points, a 0-7 goal difference and the league’s bottom position.

Mainz 05 delivered the latest blow at the Volksparkstadion, winning 5-0 after taking a 2-0 lead before halftime. Sheraldo Becker scored in the 19th minute and Philipp Mwene added another in the 41st. HSV failed to register a shot before the break, while Mainz had 10.

Coach Merlin Polzin responded with three substitutions at halftime, hoping to revive the attack and overturn the deficit. Instead, Phillip Tietz scored three minutes after the restart to make it 3-0. He added a second goal in the 83rd minute, and Ransford Königsdörffer completed the rout in stoppage time against his former club.

The result followed a busy final day of the transfer window. HSV paid nine million euros for the return of Fábio Vieira and eight million for Moroccan World Cup player Zakaria El Ouahdi, while also loaning Norwegian World Cup player David Møller Wolfe. The three arrivals raised the club’s total number of new signings to 10.

Those moves have increased expectations, but Mainz exposed how much work remains for the reshaped team. HSV produced some attempts after halftime, though none seriously threatened the visitors. Fans left the stadium almost in flight after the final whistle.
