Bundling expertise: IT specialists to confront cybercriminals

Niedersachsen, Germany – A new specialized central office has been established in Osnabrück to bolster the fight against cybercrime, a growing threat causing significant economic damage. The unit, housed within the general prosecutor's office in Oldenburg, aims to consolidate expertise and provide a central point of contact for cybercrime investigations.

Fifteen prosecutors, alongside IT specialists, will handle cases involving digital investment fraud, ransomware extortion, and distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks. Justice Minister Kathrin Wahlmann emphasized the need for such a highly specialized unit, stating, "With this central office, we are creating a powerful and highly specialized unit in the fight against cybercrime." She added that the team's legal and IT expertise is essential to effectively confront perpetrators who are becoming increasingly professional.

General Prosecutor Andreas Heuer highlighted the immense economic damage caused by cybercrime, noting that its consequences are increasingly affecting individuals directly. "We must keep pace with this development," he urged. The office plans to expand its personnel in the coming years to address the evolving landscape of digital crime.

The choice of Osnabrück as the location was influenced by the local prosecutor's existing expertise in cybercrime and the university's legal studies programs. Proximity to the higher education and administrative centers of Münster and Bielefeld in North Rhine-Westphalia also facilitates collaboration.
