Burn Less Joss Paper, Donate More: Changhua Promotes 'Merit Donation' with Gifts

Changhua County is encouraging a more meaningful way to observe the Ghost Festival with its "Donating Merit Instead of Burning Incense" campaign. The initiative aims to redirect funds typically spent on burning joss paper towards supporting social welfare organizations.

From August 10 to September 10, residents can participate by scanning a QR code on promotional materials to make online donations to designated charities. Upon uploading proof of donation to the Changhua Environmental Protection Bureau's official LINE account, donors will receive a "cultural coffee packet" created by the welfare groups. Those who donate NT$300 or more in a single transaction will also receive an additional gift: a cooling towel.

Burning joss paper is not as good as donating money to help people!

This program, first introduced in 2023, has seen growing success and public engagement. The total donation amount increased significantly from NT$140,000 in 2023 to NT$250,000 in the current year, marking an almost 80% surge. The promotional gifts have also evolved, becoming more practical, with the cooling towel being a timely addition for the hot summer weather.

The Environmental Protection Bureau is also organizing three in-person "flash mob" events on August 11, 13, and 22. These events aim to facilitate immediate gift redemption and provide an opportunity for families, including children, to learn about the value of charitable giving and helping others.
