The House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee's report, released on July 9, described Mandelson's appointment as "a disaster from start to finish." The report highlighted that Mandelson was not the Foreign Ministry's preferred candidate but was strongly pushed by Downing Street. The appointment process was reportedly rushed, and essential checks and balances were not adequately applied.

A key point of contention was Mandelson's security clearance. According to the parliamentary report, the UK Security Vetting (UKSV) had recommended against granting Mandelson high-level security clearance. Despite this, Foreign Ministry officials ultimately approved his appointment, allowing him to take up his post in February 2025. The committee criticized this, stating that future public appointments should not be announced or finalized before necessary security clearances are obtained.

Keir Starmer stated in Parliament in April that he was unaware of the UKSV's recommendation to deny Mandelson clearance until April 14. He admitted, "I should not have appointed Mandelson" and apologized for his decision. Mandelson's tenure as ambassador to the US concluded in less than a year. Starmer cited that after new details emerged in September regarding Mandelson's relationship with the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, he determined Mandelson's previous responses during his vetting were dishonest, leading to his dismissal.

The appointment controversy was one of several political setbacks Starmer faced during his approximately two-year premiership, which also included local election losses and mounting pressure within his party. These challenges ultimately led to Starmer's resignation in June, with Burnham succeeding him.
