'Butcher of Bosnia' Ratko Mladić Dies at 84 While Serving Life Sentence

Ratko Mladić, the former Bosnian Serb general infamously known as the 'Butcher of Bosnia,' has died at the age of 84. He passed away while serving a life sentence for his role in orchestrating some of the worst atrocities of the Balkan wars, including the Srebrenica massacre and the prolonged siege of Sarajevo.

Mladić was convicted in 2017 by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) on charges of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes. The tribunal found him guilty of persecution, extermination, murder, terror, and unlawful attacks on civilians, leading to his life imprisonment.

The Srebrenica massacre, which occurred in July 1995, saw Bosnian Serb forces under Mladić's command kill approximately 8,000 Bosniak Muslim men and boys. This event is considered one of the worst acts of genocide in Europe since World War II. Additionally, the nearly four-year siege of Sarajevo resulted in thousands of civilian deaths due to relentless shelling and sniper attacks.

During the sentencing, ICTY judge Alphons Orie described Mladić's actions as "unimaginable barbarity." He had been held in a UN detention facility in The Hague, where his defense team had recently requested early release, citing a rapid deterioration of his health and claiming he was "at any moment able to die."

Despite the defense's pleas, the request for early release was denied. Mladić remains a symbol of the ethnic cleansing and civilian massacres that characterized the Balkan wars, leaving a dark stain on modern European history.
