Buzău mayor: Veștea's PM nomination serves PSD's interests, aims to 'destroy PNL' and 'keep PSD afloat'

Constantin Toma, the mayor of Buzău and a prominent figure within the Social Democratic Party (PSD), has voiced strong criticism regarding the nomination of Adrian Veștea as prime minister. Toma, who recently resigned from party leadership positions, believes Veștea's appointment is not arbitrary but a calculated political maneuver designed to benefit the PSD.

Speaking to Digi 24, Toma asserted that Veștea's nomination has "two targets": the "destruction of PNL" (National Liberal Party) and "keeping PSD afloat." He contends that the decision is driven by the PSD's need for stability, rather than the country's welfare, and is aimed at preserving the party's standing in opinion polls. Toma also referenced the political direction promoted by Ilie Bolojan, suggesting that a "crusade of common sense" should not involve "betrayals" or controversial decisions.

Toma further warned that any parliamentary support for the new government could be interpreted as a "vote of betrayal," indicating potential internal dissent or public backlash. He suggested that the PSD might face losses in the event of early elections, making it crucial for them to maintain political influence through such strategic moves.

In parallel, Daniel Zamfir, the leader of PSD senators, confirmed the party's willingness to negotiate with the designated prime minister. Zamfir reiterated the PSD's commitment to a pro-European coalition, even with a liberal prime minister. He stated that the PSD "will have a discussion with Mr. Veștea" and left open the possibility of returning to a governing formula with the PNL and USR. Zamfir also reiterated opposition to Ilie Bolojan, blaming his economic policies for the current crisis.
