By-election for municipal council in Bavarian municipality now in October (German: Unterfränkische Gemeinde: Nachwahl für Gemeinderat nun im Oktober )

Residents of Karlstein am Main will head to the polls again on October 4 for a by-election to the municipal council. The Aschaffenburg district office announced the new election, citing a violation of the principle of secret voting during the previous municipal elections.

An audit of election documents and protocols revealed that candidates for the Freie Wählergemeinschaft Karlstein e.V. (FWK) were openly chosen by a show of hands rather than through a secret ballot at their nomination meeting. Consequently, a by-election is required to rectify this procedural error.

Unlike a complete re-election, this by-election will not repeat the entire electoral process. The district office confirmed that all lists and candidates who were eligible in the March 8 municipal election will be permitted to run, with the exception of the affected FWK group. The position of mayor, which was filled in a separate election in 2023 outside the regular municipal election cycle, remains unaffected by this upcoming vote.
