Cabinet yet to receive BOJ Governor shortlist amid speculation

Jamaica's Cabinet has yet to receive a shortlist of candidates for the next governor of the Bank of Jamaica (BOJ), according to Minister of Finance and the Public Service Fayval Williams. Williams pushed back against a recent report that named Senior Deputy Governor Dr. Wayne Robinson as the leading candidate.

Williams stated that Cabinet has not been informed of any front-runner and cautioned that speculation could jeopardize the selection process. She emphasized that applications were reviewed solely by the search committee, which has not yet submitted its findings. The minister did not confirm if Robinson had applied or been interviewed.

The search committee, appointed in April, is tasked with identifying suitable candidates. Their work is expected to conclude by the end of July. The process mirrors the selection of the current governor, Richard Byles, who is set to end his tenure in August. Byles, appointed in 2019, came out of retirement for the role.

Robinson, the BOJ's second-ranking executive, has been instrumental in designing and implementing Jamaica's monetary policy and financial market reforms. Cabinet will review the committee's shortlist before recommending an individual for appointment by the governor general.
