Cable theft in Tarragona disrupts high-speed trains between Barcelona and Madrid

Cable theft between Alcover and l’Espluga de Francolí, in Tarragona province, caused 15-minute delays on the high-speed line connecting Barcelona and Madrid, Adif reported Monday morning.

The railway infrastructure manager said its teams were working to resolve the incident “as soon as possible.” The disruption came only hours after service between Girona and Barcelona resumed following a 10-hour interruption caused by a lack of electrical power in the La Sagrera area.

Other parts of the network were also affected by cable theft. A theft on one of the tracks between Llançà and Sant Miquel de Fluvià disrupted trains between Girona and Portbou. Adif later said staff had resolved that incident and restored normal service.

A similar incident subsequently occurred between Lleida Pirineus and Puigverd de Lleida-Artesa. The stolen cable affected signaling and caused delays and changes to trains operating on the Lleida-Sant Vicenç de Calders section. Crews were working to replace the missing material and return the route to normal service.
