Calendar: What happened on September 8?

In 1991, more than 95 percent of voters in a referendum backed the independence of the Yugoslav republic of Macedonia. The same date also marks the 1966 television debut of the science-fiction series Star Trek, known in German as Raumschiff Enterprise.

On September 8, 1951, the United States and 47 other countries signed a peace treaty with Japan in San Francisco. The agreement ended the country’s period under U.S. military rule and restored its sovereignty. In 1941, German forces encircled Leningrad, now St. Petersburg, cutting the city off from all land routes and beginning its years-long blockade.
