Cali becomes a global hub for Afro-Latin American knowledge, but faces stark disparities

Cali, Colombia, has emerged as a critical center for Afro-Latin American knowledge, recently hosting a significant global gathering organized by Harvard University at the Universidad Icesi. This event underscores the city's prominent role in discussions surrounding Afro-descendant populations in the region.

While Cali is recognized as the second-largest city in Latin America for its Afro-descendant population, after Salvador de Bahía in Brazil, this demographic reality is shadowed by persistent socio-economic challenges. Data reveals that individuals identifying as Black, Afro-descendant, Raizal, or Palenquero in Cali experience higher unemployment rates. In the past year, the unemployment rate for this group stood at 13.1 percent, considerably higher than the 7.3 percent for the non-Afro-descendant population and the metropolitan average of 8.8 percent.

Beyond economic hardship, the Afro-Colombian community in Cali also faces disproportionately higher rates of violence. An observatory report indicated that in 2024, the homicide rate among the Afro-descendant population was 85.6 per 100,000 inhabitants, more than double the rate of 35.2 per 100,000 for other ethnic groups. The report further highlighted that homicides accounted for 75 percent of external cause deaths within the Afro-descendant community, compared to other ethnicities.
