Cali implements sweeping security for De la Espriella inauguration

Cali is finalizing preparations for the presidential inauguration of Abelardo De la Espriella, scheduled for Friday, August 7, 2026. Local authorities have announced a comprehensive package of security and mobility measures to ensure public order and attendee safety. According to El Tiempo of Bogotá, these restrictions will be in effect from August 6 to August 8, 2026, covering both urban and rural areas of Cali.

The primary measure is a dry law enforced on August 7 from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM throughout the municipality. Additionally, starting Thursday, August 6, other restrictions will begin, including a prohibition on heavy cargo transport and debris removal. The sale of fuel will be limited to vehicle tanks only, with no sales in plastic containers, bags, or cans. The temporary suspension of firearm permits and a ban on civilian drone use in Cali's airspace are also in effect.

Over 11,000 members of the Public Force, including units from the Army, Air Force, and National Police, will participate in the security operation. Specialized police units will be stationed at the ceremony venue, with authorities maintaining controls at city access points and patrols in rural and urban zones. All operations will be coordinated from a Unified Command Post (PMU), involving various government entities. Hospitals have been placed on yellow alert to bolster response capabilities, and the Emergency and Urgency Regulatory Center will manage potential incidents.

The inauguration will be attended by several international leaders, including presidents Javier Milei of Argentina, Daniel Noboa of Ecuador, and Santiago Peña of Paraguay, among others. The guest list also includes the prime minister of Curaçao, vice presidents from El Salvador and Guatemala, and foreign ministers from Israel, Sweden, and Brazil.
