Cali reconstruction plan includes 864 homes and 24 seized properties for earthquake victims

Cali’s reconstruction effort will focus on housing, land use and economic recovery after the Aug. 10 earthquake killed 154 people in the city, according to the article.

The national government, the Cali mayor’s office and the Valle del Cauca government agreed on three major legal and infrastructure initiatives. The first, managed through the Housing Ministry, will enable land and consider higher-density urban options in affected residential areas, especially in neighborhoods classified in socioeconomic strata 3 through 6, where technical and legal rules allow.

A second measure will create a subsidy mechanism to help families access 864 completed and safe homes identified by Camacol. The state agency Sociedad de Activos Especiales will temporarily assign 24 properties from its inventory to relocate affected families. Authorities said each location will undergo a technical assessment to ensure that replacement buildings pose no risk.
