California authorities uncover suspected mass killing of hundreds of rescue dogs

An investigation into an animal rescue in Fortuna, California, has uncovered a disturbing scene: the remains of over 100 dogs buried in a mass grave on the rescue's grounds. The operation is suspected of animal cruelty and fraud.

Humboldt County Sheriff's Office Major Crimes Division reported finding approximately 117 deceased dogs, along with hundreds of bones, 21 canine skulls, and six loose microchips during excavations. Forensic testing confirmed that many of the dogs were killed by gunshots. Investigators also discovered over 600 dog collars in a barn, which is believed to be the location where the animals were killed.

The sheer volume of evidence is expected to prolong the investigation, which is ongoing.
