California families to receive electricity bill discounts in August and September

Millions of California households will see a welcome reduction in their electricity bills this summer, thanks to automatic credits from Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E). Residential customers will receive two installments of $36.18 in August and September, totaling $72.36, as part of the California Climate Credit program.

This initiative is designed to help consumers manage the increased energy costs typically experienced during the hottest months, when air conditioning use surges. The credits are applied automatically to eligible PG&E customer accounts, requiring no additional enrollment or paperwork. Small businesses that qualify will also receive assistance, with a similar credit applied in October.

The timing of these credits has been adjusted to better align with peak energy consumption periods. Previously distributed differently, a recent state directive led the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to approve the shift, ensuring the financial relief coincides with higher summer utility expenses. Natural gas credits are slated to move to February starting in 2027.

Vincent Davis, a senior vice president at PG&E, stated the new distribution aims to help families manage seasonal bill increases while supporting the state's environmental goals. The California Climate Credit is funded by the state's Cap-and-Invest Program, which distributes a portion of carbon emission reduction policy revenues directly to utility users. Since its inception in 2014, PG&E customers have collectively received approximately $1.2 billion in credits.
