California Governor Race Polls: Becerra Widens Lead Over Hilton

The race to succeed California Governor Gavin Newsom is showing a clear trend, with recent polls indicating a significant lead for Democrat Xavier Becerra over Republican Steve Hilton. Multiple surveys consistently show Becerra ahead by more than 20 percentage points, positioning the former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services as the frontrunner. This advantage is reflected in the average of polls compiled by RealClearPolitics and in individual polling data. Becerra's strong standing follows a reconfiguration within the California Democratic Party, solidifying his position as a leading candidate. The latest poll from the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC), which surveyed 1003 likely voters between June 29 and July 6, found Becerra securing 61% of voter intention compared to Hilton's 36%. Beyond the head-to-head numbers, the PPIC study highlights the significant role environmental policy is expected to play in the gubernatorial campaign. A notable difference emerges when comparing the priorities of each candidate's supporters: 59% of those backing Becerra consider environmental policies a very important voting factor, whereas only 28% of Hilton's supporters share this view. This suggests a potential area of focus for both campaigns as they seek to mobilize their bases and appeal to undecided voters. The broader political landscape in California also favors Democrats, as indicated by the PPIC survey's findings on the House of Representatives elections, where the party holds a substantial advantage over Republicans.
