California Governor Gavin Newsom has accused President Donald Trump of weaponizing the Justice Department to investigate him and his wife. Newsom, a prominent Democrat and a potential presidential rival, released a video message alleging that federal agents have been approaching his friends and employees in recent days.

According to Newsom, these agents are requesting documents not because they have uncovered any wrongdoing, but rather in an attempt to find something to use against him. "Donald Trump is not going after me just because I tweet maliciously," Newsom stated, referring to his satirical online posts about Trump. He added, "He is going after me because I am considering running for president, because he hates that I consistently call him out for his lies and fraud."

Newsom labeled the president as "corrupt" and described the alleged investigation as another instance of Trump abusing the justice system to persecute political opponents. He drew a parallel to the charges brought against former FBI Director James Comey. The U.S. Justice Department has not yet responded to requests for comment from the Associated Press regarding the alleged investigation into Newsom.
