California offers instant rebates for electric cars starting this summer

California is accelerating its push for electric vehicles with a new law offering instant rebates for first-time buyers. Governor Gavin Newsom signed the bill, which provides discounts of up to $3,500 for new electric cars and $1,750 for used ones. The program, set to launch this summer, aims to make clean transportation more affordable for families. He emphasized that the initiative allows families to "drive clean, breathe clean air, and save money." New electric vehicles must have a manufacturer's suggested retail price of up to $50,000, while used vehicles are capped at $25,000. The state is investing $135.5 million, which is being matched by participating automakers, creating a total of $270 million in point-of-sale savings for Californians. This initiative is part of a broader $600 million investment in clean transportation, funded by cap-and-invest revenues and air pollution reduction fees. The goal is to help California achieve its target of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045 and foster clean energy industries.
