Cambridge's youngest Black professor dies amid plagiarism row

Jason Arday, who made history as the youngest Black professor at the University of Cambridge, has died at his London home. British police are treating the death as "unexplained" but have found no criminal involvement.

Arday's family released a statement asserting that he faced continuous insults and malicious attacks for over three years after accepting his Cambridge position. They claimed that the spread of misinformation was unbearable for Arday, who they described as gentle and always seeing the good in others.

Arday, who was born to Ghanaian immigrants, had overcome significant challenges, including autism and dyslexia, to achieve his academic success. His appointment as Cambridge's youngest Black professor in 2023 garnered global attention, particularly his backstory of not speaking until age 11 and learning to read and write only at 18. He had also been a torchbearer in the 2012 London Olympics.

However, his rise was marred by accusations of plagiarism concerning his doctoral thesis and doubts about the authenticity of his past charitable activities. British media reports even questioned the veracity of his personal experiences with autism and dyslexia. Arday resigned from his post on May 5, shortly after Cambridge launched an internal investigation into the allegations.

In his resignation letter, Arday described his tenure as being filled with "non-stop public scrutiny and personal attacks." He acknowledged that criticism is part of academic life but stated his experience far exceeded academic differences. He lamented the constant questioning and speculation, which caused deep hurt to him and his loved ones.
