Cameroon Launches 2026/2027 Cocoa Campaign Amidst Global Market Downturn

Cameroon officially launched its 2026/2027 cocoa campaign on August 6, 2026, in Yaoundé, amid a challenging global market characterized by falling prices and uncertain supply. Minister of Commerce Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana presided over the ceremony, marking the start of a new season in a context of significant price corrections after record highs in 2023 and 2024.

The global cocoa market is undergoing a major cycle reversal. Initial estimates for the upcoming campaign indicate a potential decrease in production, particularly in West Africa, the world's primary cocoa-producing region. This anticipated decline is largely attributed to unfavorable climatic conditions impacting harvests. The situation presents a complex outlook for Cameroon, a nation where cocoa remains a principal export commodity.

On the demand side, the picture is mixed. Global consumption is projected to decrease, with a notable slowdown expected in Western countries. The Ministry of Commerce highlighted a trend among chocolate manufacturers to seek alternative ingredients to cocoa butter, driven by concerns over the high price of cocoa beans. This strategic shift by manufacturers could further impact demand from traditional markets.

However, a glimmer of hope emerges from Asia, where demand for cocoa is showing an "interesting and promising dynamic," according to the Ministry of Commerce. This contrast between declining Western demand and growing Asian interest could offer new opportunities for Cameroonian cocoa producers. The government is expected to outline support measures for producers and strategies to capitalize on these emerging Asian market opportunities during the campaign launch.
