Speculation is mounting over the whereabouts and health of Cameroon's President Paul Biya, the world's oldest head of state, who has not been seen in public for a record 54 days. The 93-year-old leader, who has governed Cameroon since 1982, departed for what was described as a "short private visit" to Geneva with his wife Chantal on June 7. He and his entourage have reportedly occupied the entire 16th floor of the five-star InterContinental Hotel, a pattern of extended stays in the Swiss city that has become increasingly common in recent years. While official government statements have attempted to quell rumors, they have offered conflicting accounts of his absence. Communications Minister René Emmanuel Sadi asserted that Biya is in good health and "working from Geneva," dismissing contrary reports as "pure fantasy and malicious manipulation." Conversely, Minister of Labor Grégoire Owana stated the president is on annual leave, emphasizing that Biya, as an employee paid by the people, is entitled to vacation. Discussion of the president's health has been officially prohibited in Cameroon since October 2024, yet social media is rife with jokes about Biya working remotely.
