Cameroon’s university teachers move to paralyze the academic year

Cameroon’s university teachers have decided to bring the academic year to a standstill, with an indefinite strike across the country’s 11 public universities.

The National Union of Higher Education Teachers, known as Synes, issued the strike call after an extraordinary meeting of its executive bureau late last week. The action began on September 3 and will continue until the union’s demands are met.

The union is calling for a “dead academic year,” as anger grows around three demands. Teachers want a response to their request for an audience with the president, submitted on January 20, 2025.

They are also seeking full payment of the special allowance for research modernization for all teachers without exception, as well as the complete settlement of academic debt. The national bureau of the union said the strike has once again brought academic activities to a halt.
