Camilo Escalona honored in the National Congress’s Hall of Honor

Camilo Escalona, a historic figure in Chile’s Socialist movement and a former president of the Senate, was honored in the Hall of Honor of the National Congress on Sunday.

The ceremony was led by former undersecretary Nicole Cardoch. It brought together the Senate president, Socialist senators and deputies, mayors, Escalona’s family and former President Michelle Bachelet.

Camilo’s passing leaves a deep void in Chilean socialism, among those of us who had the privilege of knowing him and working alongside him to build a better Chile, and among all those who believe in democracy.

Bachelet said, “Camilo’s passing leaves a deep void in Chilean socialism, among those of us who had the privilege of knowing him and working alongside him to build a better Chile, and among all those who believe in democracy.”

She said that void could only be addressed by honoring the example of perseverance, commitment and consistency that Escalona left behind. His life, she said, was devoted to public service, his convictions and the causes for which he never stopped fighting.
