Camp Children Sent Home React with Vandalism

A summer camp in Sweden experienced a chaotic situation when a group of teenagers, slated to be sent home due to persistent behavioral issues, reacted with vandalism. The incident occurred at Barnens ö, a well-known camp outside Norrtälje, where camp leaders had decided to send a small group of participants home after multiple serious infractions.

Problems began on the first day of the camp, involving a group of about 40 middle schoolers. Despite interventions from camp leaders and contact with guardians, the behavior persisted, characterized by severe language, conflicts, and actions incompatible with camp activities. The decision to send a subset of the group home was made on the third day. Due to the late hour, these children spent their final night separated from the main group on an empty camp farm.

The situation was perceived as threatening by both children and staff.

Upon learning they were to be sent home the next morning, the children reacted aggressively. They returned to a previously used farm area and began damaging property. A communication sent to parents indicated that the vandalism involved tools, resulting in broken windows and damaged vehicles. Fortunately, no one was physically injured.

Camp leaders called the police, who were present for several hours on July 9. A police spokesperson stated that officers were called because the children were perceived as "outwardly aggressive" and the staff felt they had lost control. The police intervention was calm, and the case was transferred to social services because the individuals were minors. Camp management is now reviewing the incident and its handling to identify necessary actions.
