Camper van crashes into traffic jam on German highway, injuring 34

Thirty-four people, including several children, suffered injuries after a camper van collided with a traffic standstill on Germany's A9 autobahn in the state of Thuringia on Saturday evening. Police reported that all individuals sustained minor to moderate injuries, and no one's life is in danger.

The driver of the camper van, reportedly carrying two children, failed to notice the queue of vehicles and crashed into several cars. The incident damaged nine vehicles, including two minibuses carrying 11 children with special needs and their eight caregivers. The autobahn, a major route towards Berlin, remained closed for approximately five and a half hours as emergency services attended to the injured and cleared the wreckage.

This collision occurred shortly after another incident around 6 p.m. when a trailer carrying a horse overturned on the A9 in the direction of Munich. That earlier accident had led to the complete closure of the autobahn in both directions, creating the significant traffic backup that the camper van driver subsequently entered. Police have estimated the total damage from the camper van incident at around 350,000 euros.
