Can Gio's Urban Infrastructure Poised to Drive New Development Axis

Can Gio, a southern district of Ho Chi Minh City, is poised for a significant transformation driven by massive infrastructure investments. The area, designated as an expansion space towards the sea with strong economic, tourism, and ecological potential, is set to undergo a major shift in the coming three to five years.

The development momentum is being fueled by several large-scale projects. The Bến Thành-Cần Giờ high-speed rail line, spanning over 50 kilometers, will connect Bến Thành to Cần Giờ, passing through districts 4, 7, and Nhà Bè. Another crucial project is the Cần Giờ Bridge, which broke ground earlier this year. This 6.3-kilometer bridge, with a main span of nearly 3 kilometers over the Soài Rạp River, will feature six lanes and cost over 13.2 trillion Vietnamese dong. Scheduled for completion in 2029, it aims to eliminate the need for ferry services, halve travel time, and resolve a major bottleneck for the region.

In any country, infrastructure is the factor that opens up the market. For Can Gio, the emergence of a series of mega-projects will help change the urban structure, increase competitiveness, and attract more investment.

As river traffic becomes less of a constraint, the Rừng Sác road is projected to handle a substantial increase in daily vehicle volume. To accommodate this, an upgrade to ten lanes from the current six is proposed, with operations expected between 2028 and 2029. Further enhancing connectivity, a Vũng Tàu connection road is slated to begin construction in the second quarter of 2026 and finish two years later. This 14-kilometer sea-crossing route will link Cần Giờ's East Sea 2 urban area to Vũng Tàu city. The area also benefits from the nearly completed Ben Lức-Long Thành expressway. Adding to these developments is the upcoming implementation of the $5 billion Cần Giờ international transshipment port.

According to Troy Griffiths, Deputy General Director of Savills HCMC, infrastructure is a key market opener globally. For Cần Giờ, these "mega-projects" are expected to alter the urban structure, boost competitiveness, and attract more investment. Griffiths anticipates the next few years to be a "golden period" for infrastructure growth, leading to the formation of new economic zones. The district's unique ecological advantages, including its UNESCO-recognized biosphere reserve and extensive coastline, further bolster its development potential.
