Canada has imposed retaliatory tariffs of up to 50% on a wide range of U.S. products, valued at roughly C$27.6 billion (about $20 billion USD). The move, announced by the Ministry of Finance, directly mirrors the rates Washington applied to Canadian goods, escalating the ongoing trade dispute.

These new levies, set to take effect on September 8, will range from 15% to 50%, depending on the product. Affected sectors include steel, dairy, home appliances, agricultural machinery, paper, and electronics. Some items, such as fish, seafood, honey, cheese, refrigerators, freezers, and furniture, will face the highest 50% tariff. Canadian officials stated these measures are intended to protect the domestic market, refuting suggestions that the list targets specific U.S. states.

In addition to the tariffs, Canada announced a C$7.5 billion aid package to support workers and businesses grappling with the trade war. This package includes C$1.5 billion for small and medium-sized enterprises, a C$500 million liquidity line through the Business Development Bank of Canada, C$2 billion for investment projects, and C$3.5 billion for workers and employers. The government also extended several temporary unemployment insurance flexibilities for affected workers.

Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne declared that the trade war initiated by the U.S. presents an "unprecedented challenge."
