Canada Launches Online Passport Renewals Without Appointment Limits

Eligible adult Canadians applying from within Canada can now renew their passports online without the previous restriction on appointment availability. Immigration Minister Lena Diab announced Tuesday that the government is removing the cap on online renewal appointments, allowing citizens to initiate the process whenever it suits them.

"As of today, online passport renewal will be available to all eligible adult Canadians applying from within Canada. We are removing the limit on the number of people who can access this service," Diab stated at a press conference in Vancouver. She added, "That means eligible Canadians will no longer have to wait for an online application spot to become available. They will be able to begin their renewal online whenever it is convenient for them to do so."

This move comes in response to widespread reports of Canadians facing lengthy in-person and online waits for passport renewal appointments in recent years. Services Canada and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada had previously cited resource limitations as the cause for the delays in meeting demand.

Meanwhile, the Canadian passport continues to be recognized internationally for its travel privileges. According to the latest passport index by Henley and Partners, Canada's passport has climbed to seventh place globally, offering visa-free access to 182 countries.
