Canada's Kone Undergoes Major Leg Surgery; to Miss Rest of World Cup

Canada's World Cup campaign has been dealt a significant blow with the news that midfielder Ismael Kone will miss the remainder of the tournament after undergoing surgery for severe fractures in his lower left leg. The injury occurred during Canada's match against Qatar.

Last night, Ismael Kone underwent successful surgery to repair a lower limb fracture. He is expected to make a full recovery but will miss the remainder of FIFA World Cup 2026.

Kone's surgery successfully repaired fractures in his tibia and fibula bones in Vancouver. Canada Soccer confirmed the procedure's success, stating that Kone is expected to make a full recovery. The incident happened in the 51st minute of the Group B match when Qatar's Assim Madibo attempted a tackle. Kone was immediately attended to by trainers and stretchered off the field in visible discomfort.

Coach Jesse Marsch described hearing the bone snap during the match. He later shared details of Kone's positive spirits at the hospital, where three surgeons were on standby, having reviewed the play. The surgery, which lasted about an hour and a half, was deemed successful. The tackle by Madibo resulted in a red card, leaving Qatar with nine players.

By the time we got to him, he’d already had some drugs to help sedate him a little bit. He was being prepared to go into the operating room. But he was in really good spirits and he was adamant that he’s going to be fine.

Following the injury, teammate Nathan Saliba, who replaced Kone and scored Canada's fourth goal, celebrated by holding up a replica of Kone's jersey. Canada is set to face Switzerland next, with both teams currently tied on four points in Group B.

I think what happened is the surgeons watched it on TV and they saw what happened and they knew right away. And so they brought their top three surgeons to the hospital immediately to take care of him.
