Canada seeks public ideas on AI transparency

Canada's federal government is asking citizens for their ideas on how to make artificial intelligence systems more transparent. Artificial Intelligence Minister Evan Solomon announced the public consultation in an online post featuring an AI-generated video. The government wants to understand what practical AI transparency means to Canadians.

AI can do extraordinary things, but as it becomes part of our everyday life, transparency matters more than ever. Are you interacting with AI or with a real person? Was something created by AI or not?

Key questions posed include whether people are interacting with AI or a human, and whether content was created by AI. The consultation also explores improving public access to information about AI capabilities and limitations. It is considering methods for tracking serious AI-related incidents, such as prompt injection attacks that can trick systems into unauthorized actions, potentially leading to data breaches and financial fraud.

Furthermore, the government is looking into better ways to identify AI agent activity, citing examples like AI agents that can manage tasks such as shopping, sending emails, or booking meetings. The consultation paper seeks to understand where transparency is most critical for Canadians, assess the sufficiency of current practices, and identify areas needing further action. Feedback is also requested on policy instruments like voluntary codes, industry standards, and legislation, and how they could be implemented and interact.
