Canada to Impose 15%-50% Tariffs on $20 Billion of U.S. Goods

Canada is set to retaliate against U.S. trade actions by imposing its own tariffs on a wide range of American products. Starting September 8, approximately 700 U.S. goods will face retaliatory duties ranging from 15% to 50%. This move comes after the United States implemented new tariffs on Canadian products.

The value of the targeted U.S. imports amounts to $20 billion USD, mirroring the value of the Canadian goods recently subjected to U.S. tariffs. Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne described the situation as an "unprecedented challenge" but emphasized national unity in response. "What Canadians see here this morning is that we stand united. We stand united in our response," he stated.

Weeks of negotiations between Canada and the U.S. failed to yield an agreement to prevent the escalating trade dispute. The U.S. tariffs, affecting selected Canadian goods, took effect on Saturday, prompting Canada's immediate announcement of retaliatory measures. The Canadian government is also rolling out a support package valued at approximately C$35 billion to aid Canadian workers and industries impacted by the trade conflict.

The trade relationship between the two North American neighbors is substantial, with the U.S. being Canada's largest trading partner. Canadian exports to the U.S. constitute 70% of its total exports. Canada ranks as the second-largest trading partner for the U.S. in terms of goods trade, following Mexico. This tit-for-tat tariff imposition signals a significant escalation in the trade tensions between the two countries.
