Canadian Citizen of Chinese Origin Arrested in Belgium on Espionage Charges

Belgian authorities have arrested a Canadian citizen of Chinese descent on suspicion of espionage. The woman was reportedly on an internship at the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), a key NATO facility located in Belgium.

According to a statement from the prosecutor's office, the suspect is accused of espionage in favor of a third country and being part of a criminal organization. Officials have stated that further details about the woman, including her name, will not be released at this time.

The suspect reportedly drew the attention of SHAPE's security services, who then alerted the General Intelligence and Security Service. The prosecutor's office did not provide specific details regarding the nature of the alleged espionage activities.

Following the alert, the case was handed over to the federal judicial police in Charleroi. Investigators searched the suspect's apartment and workplace on Thursday, leading to a judge issuing an arrest warrant on Friday.
