Canadian PM Mark Carney says he has 'no confidence' in FIFA President Infantino

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney declared he no longer trusts FIFA President Gianni Infantino to lead the global soccer organization. Carney, whose country co-hosted the 2026 World Cup, expressed his loss of confidence following Infantino's handling of a controversial proposal to allow private investment in FIFA's commercial ventures.

"Without a doubt, I no longer have confidence in Mr. Infantino from this moment on, given what has happened," Carney told reporters. He specifically criticized the plan, which was later withdrawn, for not being discussed with FIFA's executive team. "That is not how you run any business, not even a small one, let alone something that involves global responsibility like football," Carney stated.

Despite the recent controversy, Infantino had been enjoying momentum from a highly successful 2026 World Cup, the largest ever with 48 teams, jointly organized by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
