Car bomb kills high-ranking Russian officer in Moscow

A lieutenant general in the Russian army was killed in a car bombing on the outskirts of Moscow, in an incident that highlights security vulnerabilities within Russia amid the ongoing war in Ukraine. The 62-year-old officer died on Tuesday when an improvised explosive device detonated inside his BMW X3.

The attack occurred in the Aviatorov microdistrict of Balashikha, an area known to be home to military retirees, veterans, and personnel from strategic army structures. Security camera footage and witness accounts suggest a coordinated attack. The explosion, estimated to be equivalent to 500 grams of TNT, reportedly occurred shortly after the vehicle began moving, with the device possibly triggered remotely from the trunk area.

Bystanders attempted to rescue the officer from the flames, but his injuries were fatal. "There was a powerful explosion. I stopped the car, grabbed the extinguisher, and ran towards the driver's door. I managed to pull him out of the flames, about ten meters away, but he was crying out in pain and breathing very heavily," one witness told local media.

Russian authorities have launched a criminal investigation into murder and terrorism. Police are actively searching for a suspect, described as a bearded man carrying a backpack, who was filmed near the scene before the explosion. This incident bears a chilling resemblance to a similar attack exactly one year prior in the same area, which killed Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik, a key figure in Moscow's military logistics, using an identical remote-detonated explosive device.

While the victim's identity has not been officially confirmed by the Ministry of Defense, independent Russian media and military bloggers suggest the attack is part of a series of sabotage actions and targeted eliminations aimed at high-ranking military officials and security service members involved in the invasion of Ukraine. Kyiv's intelligence services have not officially claimed responsibility for the attack.
