Car crashes on Biên Hòa-Vũng Tàu Expressway amid road repairs

A car fell into a construction pit on the Biên Hòa-Vũng Tàu Expressway after passing warning signs at a section under repair, leaving the vehicle badly damaged.

The crash occurred on the evening of Sept. 7 near Km 2, in the section of the expressway's component project 1 located in Phước Tân Ward, Đồng Nai. Videos circulating on social media showed the aftermath and the damaged car.

Footage said to come from the vehicle's dashboard camera showed the car traveling in the right lane, next to the emergency lane. Two rows of reflective posts appeared ahead, along with a warning board positioned to one side rather than in the middle of the lane. The driver swerved past the warning sign, but about four seconds later the car dropped into the worksite pit.

The road surface had been excavated for repairs over a stretch of about 20 meters. The area reportedly had no street lighting, while the warning signs had been placed too close for the driver to avoid the work zone in time.

Leaders of the Đồng Nai City Traffic Works Project Management Board said the repairs formed part of a planned operation registered with the relevant management units. Regarding the driver's complaint about the warning signs, the project board said related parties were working with authorities to verify the circumstances. The 54-kilometer expressway crosses Đồng Nai for 34.2 kilometers and the area formerly known as Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu in Ho Chi Minh City for 19.8 kilometers. The route began operating temporarily on May 18.
