Caracas Cuartel de la Montaña 4F closed due to earthquake damage

The Cuartel de la Montaña 4F in Caracas, a site of historical significance and the final resting place of former President Hugo Chávez, has been temporarily closed to the public. The closure is a direct consequence of structural damage sustained from recent seismic activity that has affected Venezuela.

The Hugo Chávez Foundation announced the measure, stating the need to restrict access to evaluate and address the damage to the building. The foundation apologized to visitors for the inconvenience, emphasizing that the temporary closure is necessary for the safety and preservation of the historic infrastructure.

This iconic military installation, built in the early 20th century, holds immense historical and patrimonial value. Since 2013, it has safeguarded the mortal remains of Hugo Chávez. The foundation's mission includes preserving his legacy through documentary funds, managing museum areas, and promoting the cultural and historical heritage.

The closure meant the Cuartel de la Montaña 4F could not open its doors on July 28, the 72nd anniversary of Chávez's birth. Authorities have not provided an estimated reopening date, awaiting technical assessments to certify the facility's safety.
