Caregiver Sentenced for Stealing Tens of Millions of Won from Dementia Patient in South Korea

A 70-year-old caregiver in South Korea has received a prison sentence with a four-year suspension for defrauding a severely dementia-afflicted patient out of tens of millions of won. The caregiver illicitly used the patient's bank card for personal expenses after the patient was moved to a nursing home.

The Cheongju District Court handed down the sentence on charges including fraud and violation of the Specialized Credit Finance Business Act. The caregiver, identified as Ms. A, was accused of making 86 transactions totaling over 20 million won (approximately $15,000 USD) from the patient's account between March 4 and April 5, 2024. Investigations revealed that Ms. A had obtained the patient's check card and created a new one on March 4, the same day she learned the patient would be admitted to a care facility.

In its ruling, the court stated, "The defendant took advantage of the fact that the victim was suffering from severe dementia and was being admitted to a nursing home to gain property benefits." The court further elaborated that the sentence was determined by considering the defendant's age, her relationship with the victim, the motive behind the crime, and the circumstances following the offense.

The patient, identified as Ms. B, was under the caregiver's charge before her institutionalization. The caregiver's betrayal of trust, exploiting the patient's vulnerable condition for financial gain, led to the legal repercussions. The suspended sentence means Ms. A will avoid immediate imprisonment if she adheres to the terms of her probation.
