Carlos the Jackal Seeks Conditional Release for Deportation to Venezuela

Ilich Ramírez Sánchez, the infamous Venezuelan terrorist known globally as "Carlos the Jackal," is seeking conditional release from French custody. His legal team has submitted a request to French judicial authorities with the ultimate aim of his deportation back to Venezuela.

Ramírez Sánchez's lawyer, Bernard Ripert, formally lodged the request with an anti-terrorism judge in March. The defense also presented a secondary plea for the suspension of his sentence on health grounds, citing the aging terrorist's advanced age. The 75-year-old has been in French custody since his capture in Sudan in August 1994.

French prosecutors confirmed the request is currently undergoing technical investigation by the competent court. No public hearings are scheduled as the case proceeds. Ramírez Sánchez has been handed three life sentences by French courts for various acts of terrorism. These include the 1975 assassinations of two French intelligence agents and an informant, bombings between 1982 and 1983 that killed 11 and injured nearly 200, and a 1974 attack on a Paris shopping gallery that resulted in two deaths and dozens injured.
