"Carmen" at Salzburg Festival: In the Land of Toxic Men

Soprano Asmik Grigorian makes her highly anticipated "Carmen" debut at the Salzburg Festival, under the baton of conductor Teodor Currentzis. The production, directed by choreographer Gabriela Carrizo and her dance company Peeping Tom, eschews traditional visual spectacle.

Festival organizers and local authorities experienced relief as the opening day concluded without disruptions. Unlike the previous year, when protesters had occupied parts of the Felsenreitschule, this year's opening ceremony and opera premiere proceeded smoothly, creating the desired atmosphere of exceptional artistic celebration.

Carrizo's directorial approach, in collaboration with Peeping Tom, moves away from the conventional visual elements often associated with Bizet's opera. The focus appears to be on a more contemporary interpretation, potentially exploring the complex themes within the opera through movement and a less conventional staging.
